Hubspot + Wordpress: Subdomain or Folder? How to Choose the Best SEO Option

Written by Oriol Escofet | Jul 17, 2020 6:58:56 AM

Have you ever wondered whether it’s better to create a subdomain or a folder for your blog or landing page? Both options have advantages and disadvantages, so there’s no single right answer. However, in certain technical scenarios, the choice can be nearly mandatory.

In this article, we’ll explain how to manage a common situation we’ve encountered with many clients: integrating Hubspot and Wordpress.

Anatomy of a URL

Before deciding, it’s essential to understand how a URL is structured and why each part influences user experience and SEO.

A URL consists of six parts, each playing an important role:

1 - Protocol

The most common protocols are http and https. We always recommend using https to ensure security and avoid browser warnings.

2 - Subdomain

This is a third-level domain dependent on the main domain. You can create multiple subdomains at no additional cost.

3 - Domain

This is the main domain, usually the name of your company or brand.

4 - Top-Level Domain (TLD)

The domain extension, such as .com, .cat, or .net, indicating country or type of organization.

5 - Folder

Subfolders within the main domain that organize content.

6 - Page

The final file or resource displayed. It’s key for SEO as it usually includes relevant keywords.

Subdomain or Folder: What to Choose?

By default, when purchasing a domain, the corporate website is hosted on www and content is organized in folders, centralizing SEO authority.

However, when you need to combine different platforms — such as Wordpress for the main site and Hubspot for blogs or landing pages — the only technically viable solution is to use independent subdomains for each platform.

For example: www.mydomain.cat on Wordpress and blog.mydomain.cat on Hubspot, since folders of one domain cannot be hosted on different servers.

Hubspot offers tools to facilitate this setup and ensure smooth coexistence.

How Does This Affect SEO?

Google treats subdomains and folders differently: folders inherit the main domain’s authority, while subdomains are considered independent sites.

This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the strategy: a subdomain allows you to position a product or service with its own identity, such as a blog or landing page, without depending on the main domain.

  • For coexistence between Wordpress and Hubspot, the only technical option is to use subdomains. Hubspot simplifies this integration.
  • SEO can benefit or not, depending on strategy and content. Subdomains allow you to focus keywords and improve metrics like bounce rate.
  • Understanding URL anatomy is essential to make informed decisions and avoid common mistakes.
